In the south of Zanzibar Island, Jozani Forest is a place full of wonders and delight, with stories of leopards, medicinal cures, and breathtaking landscapes. Currently, the Jozani-Chwaka Bay area is under consideration to become Zanzibar’s second World Heritage Site, thanks to its remarkable biodiversity. This forest is home to several endemic species, including the Zanzibar red colobus monkey.
During your visit, a park ranger will guide you along a nature trail lined with eucalyptus and mahogany trees, explaining the medicinal properties of various plants and sharing information about the animals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the diverse ecosystems of this tropical rainforest.
It is common to see groups of Zanzibar red colobus monkeys leaping from branch to branch in search of food. These monkeys have become accustomed to human presence, allowing you to get close enough to photograph them as they eat, play, and leap through the treetops.
The mangrove boardwalk will take you over the swamp, where, depending on the tide, you can observe crabs scurrying across the mud. Mangroves play a crucial role in environmental conservation and are an essential resource for local villagers and their communities. The park ranger will explain the different mangrove species found in the swamp and their uses in the daily lives of the local population.
