Mikumi National Park, covering 3,230 sq km, is one of Tanzania’s most accessible wildlife areas, known for its vast open plains and varied wildlife. Often called a “mini Serengeti,” it offers a classic safari experience and is an excellent destination for those looking to explore Tanzania’s wilderness near Dar es Salaam.
The park is home to an array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, buffalos, and wildebeests. It’s also notable for its hippo pool, where hippos and crocodiles gather, and a variety of bird species, like lilac-breasted rollers and bateleur eagles. Bird watchers can expect to see over 400 species, especially around the Mkata River and pools.
Mikumi’s landscape is a mix of savanna, woodland, and acacia scrub, with grassy plains reminiscent of the Serengeti. The Mkata Floodplain is ideal for game viewing, and the best time to visit is during the dry season (June to October), when animals are easy to spot around water sources.
Located about 283 kilometers from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park is accessible by a 4-5 hour drive or a quick flight, making it a great choice for weekend or day trips from the city.
Mikumi offers classic game drives along the Mkata Plains, with the chance to see herds of elephants and predator sightings. Walking safaris led by knowledgeable guides are also available, offering a close-up experience of the flora, fauna, and tracks of the park.
